Longview Farm Memories

In 1990, Linda Newcom Jones set out to preserve the history of this magnificent farm by documenting the memories of the people who once lived, worked and played there. She and her mother, Barbara Newcom, covered hundreds of miles to visit and interview over forty-seven employees, friends and Long relatives.

Below are remembrances from former residences of the farm, followed by quotes from just a few of those interviews. All forty-seven complete interviews can be found in Linda's book,  "The Longview We Remember".

"One day I went down to the Greenhouse and they had cut three thousand roses and carnations to go into Kansas City. I used to get roses for a dollar-and-a-half a dozen and gardenias for twenty-five cents."

"We had volleyball teams that played in the arena of the Show Horse Barn. Every department had a team Each team had different colored vests and both men and women played. Mrs. Combs was the biggest duck in the puddle when she got to playing and got excited."

"On Saturday nights it was customary for all the farmers to come to town and the Lee's Summit merchants would stay open and everyone would visit. Mr. and Mrs. Combs would bring all their help from the Big House to Lain-McAdoo drugstore."

"There were spots to tie the boats up by the Pergola. We used to have a boat house. Everybody that worked here could have a boat and store it in there. They had big bull frogs in the lily ponds and they'd sit on the lily pads and crock. We had frog leg dinners!"

"I loved to hear the clock outside on top of the barn when it would strike. It was a big 'gong' that you could hear almost all over the farm. It struck on the hour and the half-hour."

"Mrs. Combs was great for the children. Every Christmas she would fix a great big box and send to each family on the farm. I enjoyed living on Longview Farm and Mrs. Combs was awfully good to us."
